The Los Angeles Rams released kicker Harrison Mevis on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after their 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. The decision, confirmed by the NFL, came after a performance in which the player missed two field goal attempts.
Mevis had the chance to seal the game in overtime, but his 48-yard attempt was blocked by Greg Rousseau's fingertips. The kicker had also missed a 50-yard attempt in the first quarter.
Moments after the block, Tyler Bass made a 45-yard field goal that gave Buffalo the victory.
Rams head coach Sean McVay acknowledged that special teams mistakes were decisive in the outcome.
Mevis signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2024, though he never actually played for the team. Last season, he was signed by the Rams to replace Joshua Karty.
During the 2025 regular season and playoffs, the kicker made 18 of his 19 field goal attempts. However, his misses on Monday brought his season record down to five makes on nine attempts.
Blake Grupe, a former kicker for the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to replace Mevis. Grupe spent the last few weeks on the New York Jets' practice squad, and the NFL confirmed that it had terminated his contract with that franchise, according to reports by NFL.com and The Athletic.
NFL teams tend to make quick decisions when kickers miss their kicks. This position is subject to intense scrutiny and has a higher turnover rate than many others. Kickers typically join teams as free agents, rather than through the draft, and often have shorter contracts.
NFL suspends Alaric Jackson for two games
Cameras captured the offensive tackle striking the Buffalo defensive linebacker in the face following an apparent verbal altercation near the area where postgame interviews were still taking place on the field.
Jackson was penalized for "an act of unsportsmanlike conduct" while his teammates "were shaking hands and exchanging jerseys," according to an NFL statement.
Unless an appeal is successful, Jackson will miss the Rams' upcoming games against the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders.
